Values are living force behind one’s beliefs and principles. If engaged, they lead from behind, determining where we spend money, time and energy without even being a conscious decision. In the 1970s, a study was conducted by Robert Miller in the Religious Studies Department of Tufts University to discover if there was a unique value system for Unitarian Universalists (UU) that was different from other religious groups. The study concluded that yes, UU has a distinct value of loving that is different from all other religious and nonreligious groups. What does a value system of loving include? Given that the word love can be used in so many different ways, how would living out this value be actualized? These are some of the questions we’ll explore together as we consider the value of love in our world today.
