Forum: Is it Time for an 8th Principle?
At the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) General Assembly (GA) in 2017 there was discussion of adding an 8th Principle, specifically to address racism in our congregations. The presenter will explain more about the 8th Principle and Article II revisions and share why she supports them both. Article II will be introduced at this year’s General Assembly. If it receives a simple majority, the final vote on Article II will be at the 2024 General Assembly. Jenny Teed is a lifelong Unitarian Universalist member, and served as Director of Religious Education at the Detroit and Farmington congregations from 2006-2011. She is currently consulting for MUUSJN (Michigan Unitarian Universalist Social Justice Network) around issues of racial and environmental justice. Jenny received her BSW with honors from University of Detroit Mercy. Jenny is a visual artist. She has worked with children and youth for 3 decades and for the last 10 years has taught art to children, families and senior citizens. Jenny is a longtime grassroots activist, who has helped organize and participated in many actions and events. She is one of the founders of Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ) in Metro Detroit and the Suburban Connections for Collective Liberation newsletter.
