Defining Love
Love is a word that gets used and over used, by our culture and ourselves! This Black History Month — with a holiday dedicated to love half way through — we’ll explore the work of two African American activists in their own right. bell hooks, who passed away just this past December, published All about Love in 2001 and challenges conventional definitions of romantic love and gender norms. In 2020, Bishop Michael Curry, presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, penned Love is the Way using his life and faith story, with wisdom shared about love, nonviolence, and resilience to meet the challenges of our world today. Each author comes at love from a different angle. Both hooks and Curry are convicted of love’s insurmountable power. Pr. Sarah Semmler Smith leads the second part of this two-part service.
